Our ASSORT Process | Featured on Access Carolina

We hope your 2024 is off to a great (organized) start!

Did you catch us on Access Carolina? We were invited to share our tips for getting organized in 2024.

As we discussed on our segment, here is the breakdown of our ASSORT process we shared from our free Getting Organized Guide!

A (assess) – Start each project by assessing the space you want to work on. Choose one small area in your home and just focus on that area. For example, the coat/entryway closet, or a few drawers in your bathroom. Set time aside in your calendar to do this!

S (sort) Now it's time to pull everything (and we mean everything) out of that space and sort into categories of keep, donate, trash, and relocate. Usually, projects get worse before they get better, trust the process.

S (shop) – Before buying any containers, always measure your space! Make sure you're measuring correctly using the inside dimensions of each drawer, cabinet, or shelf. While shopping, look for containers that maximize the space and work best for the area.

O (organize) – Sort and arrange things from your keep pile by category. Decide if you want to macro organize items by a general category (example: a variety of snacks in one bin) or micro organize (each type of snack gets its own compartment or bin). General may be easier to maintain if your items change, while specific can help you locate things more quickly.

R (relocate) – Now is the time to make sure that the items that don't belong in the area you've organized find their way home. Only relocate those items after you are done organizing. This will prevent distractions and decision fatigue. Take all donations to a local thrift store and remove all trash and recycling. Put donations in your car in the passenger seat (not in the trunk!), and schedule a time in your phone calendar so you are more inclined to remember to drop them off!

T (train) –  Once you get organized, it's time to stay organized! Our Getting Organized Guide has tips for making sure you maintain your newly organized space. Our favorite tip is to start a daily tidy routine. At the end of the day, take 5-15 minutes to put everything back in its home and reset your kitchen and living spaces. This will help you feel more at peace and maintain a clutter-free home.
